My Dog Is Scared of the Lawn Mower. Should They Stay Outside?

A mower is loud and physically hazardous. Keep your dog safely indoors during mowing, then practice at a distance later.
2 min read·Field notes

You start the mower and your dog runs along the fence barking or hides under the deck. Bring them inside before mowing begins. Even a confident dog should not be near moving blades, thrown stones, fuel, or an extension cord. A frightened dog may bolt through a gate or toward the machine. Set up a quiet room away from the yard with water and a comfortable place to rest.

Do not tether your dog nearby to get them accustomed to the sound. If they remain panicked indoors, ask your veterinarian about a fear plan, especially if reactions to other noises are growing. A qualified, reward-based behavior professional can help make practice gradual rather than overwhelming.

Let the sound become manageable

On a day when nobody is mowing nearby, show your dog the switched-off mower from a comfortable distance, reward calm investigation, and put it away. Later, with the dog safely indoors or behind a closed barrier, a helper can briefly run the mower far enough away that your dog notices it without becoming distressed. Reward relaxed behavior and stop. Keep real mowing separate from practice until your dog is genuinely comfortable, and never allow access to the working machine.

If your dog refuses food, trembles, or tries to escape, increase distance and reduce the sound next time. It is also fine to manage every mow with a quiet room rather than teaching them to love the machine. Safety and calm matter more than proximity. For a longer plan around loud sounds, see the noise-fear guide. Keep the dog safely inside while the mower is running.
