My Dog Picks Up Sticks on Every Walk. Should I Let Them Chew?

Sticks can splinter or injure the mouth. Swap to a safer activity and speak to a vet after a suspected injury or ingestion.
2 min read·Field notes

Your dog finds a stick and trots proudly beside you. Then they start crunching it into pieces. Wood can splinter, lodge in the mouth or throat, or be swallowed. A dog that suddenly paws at the mouth, drools, bleeds, coughs, or seems painful after chewing a stick needs veterinary attention. If you think they swallowed a piece, contact your veterinarian promptly even if they seem well at first.

Replace the stick before the crunch

Carry a safe toy your dog likes to hold or a suitable reward. When you see a stick ahead, call your dog toward you before they grab it, reward, and move on. Practice "leave it" at home with easy objects. For an item already in the mouth, teach a fair trade separately with a safe toy. Do not chase or pry at a dog who might guard the object, seek qualified help for that pattern.

Avoid throwing sticks for fetch. A dog running toward a sharp or angled stick can suffer a serious injury. Choose a dog-safe toy of the right size instead and supervise use, especially if your dog tears and swallows pieces. Let your dog have plenty of safe sniffing time on walks so the only interesting thing isn't the next piece of wood.

If your dog repeatedly swallows non-food items, arrange a veterinary check for possible medical and behavioral causes. The goal is not to make the trail boring. It is to leave the dangerous bits of it on the ground.
