My Dog Ate a Cigarette Butt. Should I Wait and Watch?

Nicotine can poison dogs quickly. Call a veterinarian or animal poison service now, even if your dog looks well.
2 min read·Field notes

Your dog picks up a discarded cigarette butt and swallows it. Contact your veterinarian or an animal poison service immediately. Cigarettes and other nicotine products are toxic to dogs, symptoms can appear quickly and may include vomiting, agitation, tremors, or seizures. Do not wait for those signs, give home remedies, or induce vomiting unless a professional tells you to.

Tell the clinic what you saw, when it happened, your dog's weight, and whether it was a cigarette, vape component, nicotine gum, or another product. If packaging is available, bring it. A vape cartridge or battery adds further hazards. If your dog becomes weak, collapses, or has trouble breathing, seek emergency veterinary care immediately.

Change the walk after the emergency

Once your dog has been medically assessed, choose routes with less litter and scan the ground ahead. Turn away early when you spot cigarette ends. Use a secure lead and well-fitting harness you can control. Teach "leave it" with harmless practice items indoors and reward your dog for looking back at you, do not put nicotine products down as training props. Repeated scavenging may call for a qualified, reward-based trainer and a properly introduced basket muzzle as part of a plan, but neither replaces urgent care after ingestion.

Your dog's curiosity can be addressed later. The risk from nicotine makes the next step a call, not a training session.
