My dog hides when we cook. Is the stove frightening them?

Cooking changes a whole room at once. An extractor fan, hot pan, oven beep, smell or earlier smoke alarm can all become part of the pattern.
2 min read·Field notes

You cannot identify one cause just because your dog hides when the stove starts. First keep them away from hot surfaces and allow them to settle in a familiar room with a clear exit.

Check that the smoke alarm and ventilation work as intended. Never disable an alarm to solve a dog's fear. If there is actual smoke, handle the household safety issue first. Do not lure the dog toward a hot stove with treats or trap them in the kitchen for practice. The noise-fear guide may help if the beeps and fan are the hard part, but it does not assume every cooking reaction is sound phobia.

On a day without a meal to make, notice the earliest cue your dog reacts to. Could they remain comfortable while the extractor is off and an empty pan is visible, or does the oven opening change things? Change only a safe, mild cue at a time and let the dog leave. A qualified reward-based professional can help with persistent distress. If the reaction came on suddenly or involves broader behavioral change, ask your vet.

Today, set up a safe resting place before starting dinner. Let the dog choose distance from the kitchen.
