My Dog Growls When I Pick Them Up. What Am I Missing?

A lift can hurt or take away a dog's choice. Stop forcing it and check for pain before retraining.
2 min read·Field notes

You reach under your dog's chest and they stiffen, then growl. It can be frightening to hear, especially from a dog who enjoys cuddles. But a growl is a useful warning: being lifted may hurt, feel unsafe, or mean they cannot get away from something worrying them.

Put them down safely if you already have them, and stop trying to lift them for now. Don't punish the growl or ask someone else to hold the dog while you try again. If this is new, if your dog yelps or limps, or if they are recovering from illness or surgery, arrange veterinary advice. Pain is not always obvious until a particular movement brings it out.

Can your dog walk into the car with a safe ramp, or can the vet examine them on the floor? If lifting is essential, ask the veterinary team how to do it without worsening an injury or putting anyone at risk. Large dogs or dogs who struggle can injure both themselves and the person lifting them.

Once a veterinarian has ruled out or addressed pain, practice a predictable cue for lifting. Begin with brief, comfortable touch on a non-slip surface and reward. Later, say the cue, support the dog's body, lift just a little, put them down, and reward. Stop well before they freeze or growl. Build height and duration only when they remain relaxed. A dog who can move away between repetitions is telling you whether the plan is working.

If they have snapped or bitten, a qualified, reward-based behavior professional can help design a safe handling plan. The first goal is not to win the lift. It is to understand why it became hard.
