Why Does My Dog Keep Licking Their Paws?

Frequent paw licking may be a skin or pain problem, not a training habit. Check the paw and ask your vet.
2 min read·Field notes

Your dog pauses mid-evening to lick the same paw again. You call them away, and a minute later they return to it. Repeated licking may reflect itching, inflammation, infection, an injury, or another health concern. Calling it boredom before checking the paw can miss the reason it hurts or itches.

Look for redness, swelling, a cut, discharge, a broken nail, or something lodged between the toes. Don't dig into a painful paw or apply human creams. If there is a wound, marked swelling, limping, persistent licking, or a sudden change, contact your veterinarian. They can identify the cause and advise treatment. Repeated licking can also damage skin further, so don't wait for a training cue to solve it.

What to note before the visit

Does your dog lick one paw or several? Did it start after a walk, a change in season, or a grooming product? Is there a smell, staining, or redness? A brief note and clear photo can help your vet, without replacing the exam. If your dog resists paw handling, don't force a closer look, let the clinic know in advance.

Once a medical cause is treated or ruled out, you can consider whether stress or an established repetitive pattern is involved, ideally with professional guidance. Meanwhile, give your dog comfortable ways to rest and safe activities they enjoy. Distracting them every time may interrupt the moment, but it does not treat an itchy or sore foot.

The practical first question is not "How do I stop the licking?" It is "What is happening to this paw?"
