My Dog Is Frightened at the Groomer. How Do We Make the Next Visit Safer?

Tell the groomer what happened, check for painful coat or skin, and practice handling without rushing the next appointment.
2 min read·Field notes

Your dog was calm at home, then froze or snapped while being brushed at the salon. The place, noise, handling by a stranger, and a painful mat can all change how a dog copes. Don't wait until the next booking to see whether it happens again.

Call the groomer and explain what you saw and which part of the appointment was difficult. If your dog has snapped or bitten, say so plainly. Ask your veterinarian to check for pain, skin problems, or urgent coat care. Severe matting may need a veterinary or specialized grooming plan, don't delay necessary care while trying to teach the dog to like a brush.

Build the easy pieces at home

Teach comfortable handling in short sessions: a hand near the shoulder, a brief touch, then a reward and a break. Introduce a suitable brush separately, at a distance, before asking for one gentle stroke. Let your dog move away. If they stiffen, lick their lips, or pull back, make the step smaller. Avoid practicing on a sore patch.

If the groomer agrees, a no-procedure visit to the salon can help your dog experience the space without a full appointment. Keep it short and rewarding. Ask what low-stress handling and breaks are possible during future care, and whether a different grooming setup suits your dog better. A qualified, reward-based behavior professional can help with fear or bite risk.

The goal is not to finish every grooming task in one visit. It is to keep essential care safe while making the next visit more predictable.
