My dog refuses the slow-feeder bowl but eats from a normal bowl. Should I insist?

No. A slow feeder is a tool, not a required way to eat. If your dog eats the usual food from a normal bowl but walks away from the puzzle, give them access to the meal they can manage.
2 min read·Field notes

Do not let them go without food until they solve it, especially if they have already vomited after missing a meal. If they vomit, lose weight or have a changing appetite, speak with your vet before treating it as frustration.

Look at whether the ridges make food hard to reach, the dish slides or another dog watches the meal. If the vet wants a slower pace, ask about safe alternatives such as smaller portions of the usual ration or a very easy feeder. Supervise a new food toy, and stop if the dog paws frantically, bites pieces off or cannot get enough food. The article on a dog giving up on puzzle toys shows how to make the first attempt easy, but eating enough takes priority over enrichment.

A feeder that works for another dog might be too difficult, noisy or unpleasant for yours. Keep other pets apart at mealtimes and do not chase a fixed target number of minutes. A vet can help decide whether meal speed is a medical concern at all.

Today, serve the usual ration in a bowl your dog will use and note any vomiting or discomfort. Change the gadget only after you know what problem it is meant to solve.
