My Dog Charges the Front Door When Family Gets Home. How Do We Slow It Down?

A rush at the door can lead to escape or injury. Set up a barrier and teach a calm waiting place before arrivals.
2 min read·Field notes

The key turns, and your dog sprints across the room toward the doorway. Even if they are pleased to see someone, a hard rush can knock a person over or put the dog outside before anyone has hold of them. Use a secure gate or a closed room before the door opens, especially if your dog has ever slipped out. Do not rely on a shouted "stay" at the very moment a familiar person arrives.

Check that everyone in the home knows the safe entry routine. A family member can message before coming in so the dog is behind the barrier. If the dog has bitten, jumps hard enough to injure someone, or is frantic rather than simply excited, ask for qualified, reward-based behavior help. New or unusual distress also deserves veterinary advice.

Rehearse the quiet version

Teach your dog to go to a mat away from the door and reward them for remaining there while you take a step toward it. Practice touching the handle, opening it a crack, and closing it with no one entering. Keep the dog far enough from the exit that a mistake cannot become an escape. Then ask a helper to make a short, planned arrival while the dog is safely contained. Reward calm feet on the floor and release for a greeting only when it is safe.

If they rush, go back to an easier step rather than making the family member repeat a dramatic entry. A calmer welcome is one where the door can close and everyone has room to breathe. For more on a steadier arrival routine, see the doorway arrival guide. The gate remains a useful safety boundary while you practice.
