The Walking Club

My older dog just became afraid of thunder. Why now?

For years, your dog slept through storms. Now a rumble sends them pacing to the bathroom. It can be tempting to buy a calming product and hope the next storm goes better. A new fear in an older dog deserves a vet conversation first, especially if you've noticed other changes. Pain, illness and sensory changes can affect behavior, you can't tell the cause from the storm alone.

Make the next storm safer

Give your dog a choice of a quiet interior room, with a familiar bed and water. Close the curtains and try gentle background sound if it helps. Stay nearby if your dog wants company. If they want to hide, let them. Don't force them into a crate: some dogs panic when confined during loud noises and can hurt themselves trying to escape.

Plan for doors and gates before the storm arrives. A frightened dog may bolt. If your dog is shaking, pacing or trying to escape, this isn't the time to test a thunder recording or ask for a long sit. Your job in that moment is to help them feel safer, not to rehearse the storm.

Work on the fear between storms

Once your vet has checked for health factors, ask about a behavior plan and whether treatment for anxiety makes sense. For some dogs, gradual work with recordings at a level that doesn't cause distress can help. Real storms are more than a recording: light, rain and other changes may matter too. Move at your dog's pace, and get qualified help rather than turning up the volume to see if they've improved. Ask your vet before giving supplements, CBD or medication, don't copy a dose from a forum post.

Tonight, pick the quiet room and let your dog explore it when the weather is calm. Put down their bed, keep the exit open, and notice whether they choose to settle there. If a storm is already happening, skip practice and make the space available without forcing them into it. Because this fear is new, ask your vet about pain, hearing and other changes, the senior dog changes guide can then help you adapt the routine around an older dog.

If you need a starting point for the behavior side, the AI trainer can help sort the pattern. A sudden change or severe panic still calls for your vet first.
