My Dog Won't Stop Licking the Other Dog's Ears. Should I Interrupt?

A little licking can be ordinary social behavior, but repeated licking may bother the other dog or signal an ear problem.
2 min read·Field notes

One dog keeps licking the other's ears. The recipient turns away, moves across the room, or stiffens, and the licking follows. Interrupt gently and give both dogs space. Do not wait for a growl or snap to confirm that one dog has had enough. If the ear smells unusual, looks red, or the dog shakes their head or scratches, ask your veterinarian to check it, licking may be drawn to a medical problem and can add irritation.

A brief, loose-bodied interaction with both dogs able to walk away is different from one dog repeatedly pursuing the other. Use a gate or separate resting areas if the licker will not leave them alone. If either dog has bitten or the interaction escalates, seek veterinary and qualified behavior advice before allowing them together unsupervised.

Reward the pause

Call the licking dog away at an easy moment and reward coming to you. Give them a suitable separate activity, such as a sniff game or a chew enjoyed behind a barrier. Practice short, calm time together and end it before the licking becomes persistent. Do not push either dog into continued contact or scold the dog who growls, the warning says they need room.

Watch what happens after the separation. If the licker fixates on one particular ear or the recipient avoids touch there, the veterinary check moves to the top of the list. A household can be social without asking one dog to endure unwanted grooming. Once a vet has checked an irritated ear, the second-dog household guide can help you plan separate rest and activity for two dogs. Stop contact when either dog wants space.
