My dog suddenly started barking at night. What should I check before training?

A new nighttime bark may be an alert to a sound, a toilet need, discomfort or distress.
2 min read·Field notes

It is not enough information to decide the dog is demanding attention. Go and check what is happening without scolding or turning the moment into a lively game.

Check access to water and a safe toilet chance, the room temperature, unfamiliar noises, and whether your dog looks painful, confused or unusually anxious. A sudden change deserves a veterinary call, especially if it persists, comes with new toileting or appetite changes, or your dog cannot settle. If a crate leads to frantic escape attempts or injury, stop using it as a way to wait out barking and get individual help.

For the next few nights, note the time, where the dog was, what they did just before barking and whether a specific sound or need was present. A simple recording can help if it is safe to leave running. Make the sleeping area comfortable and allow an easier place to rest while you learn the pattern. Do not keep triggering a suspected noise to test your theory at bedtime.

If health and immediate needs are cleared, a qualified reward-based trainer can help with a quiet routine matched to the actual trigger. A guide about daytime settling or separation is not a substitute for checking a new nighttime change. Tonight, choose one safe sleep setup and record what happens.
