My Dog Races the Fence When Bikes Pass. How Can I Stop It?

Fence running can become a repeated chase. Block access to the route and teach a turn before the bike passes.
2 min read·Field notes

A cyclist comes down the path and your dog sprints the length of the yard, barking along the fence. The cyclist moves on, and the pattern repeats tomorrow. The rush may be exciting or worrying, but it can lead to escapes, injuries, and distress for people passing by. Check for gaps or weak gates, then keep your dog out of that part of the yard when bikes are likely. Do not leave them outside to practice the chase unsupervised.

A solid visual barrier or a second interior fence can prevent a close run along the boundary if installed safely. Provide another supervised area for sniffing and play. If your dog can jump the fence, reach passersby, or has injured themselves, keep them securely indoors or on a safe lead until you have qualified, reward-based behavior help.

Catch the moment before the sprint

Practice responding to their name in a quiet yard and reward a turn toward you. Teach a short "find it" game away from the fence. When you spot a bike at a distance and your dog is still able to respond, cue the turn or game and guide them to the calmer area. If they are already racing, focus on safe management rather than shouting over the reaction. On later sessions, begin farther from the fence and earlier in the bike's approach.

You cannot control every cyclist. You can control access to the race track your dog has made along the fence. For more on responding to fast-moving triggers, see the dog-chasing guide. Limit access to the fence line while you work on it.
