Why Does My Dog Bark When the Dishwasher Runs?

A dishwasher hums, clicks, and sprays in changing stages. Let your dog rest away from it and introduce the sounds slowly.
2 min read·Field notes

You press start and your dog patrols the kitchen, barking at the machine. A dishwasher has several sounds: water filling, a motor running, and dishes shifting. Your dog may respond to one part of the cycle rather than the whole appliance. Do not keep them beside it until they stop. Give them a quieter room with a comfortable place to rest.

Keep detergent and pods securely out of reach. If your dog chews or swallows any of them, contact a veterinarian or poison service immediately. If fear of sounds is new or spreading to other household noises, a veterinary check can help rule out medical changes. Severe fear may need a qualified, reward-based behavior plan.

Start with the easy sound

At a time when the dishwasher is off, reward your dog for calmly being in the kitchen. Practice closing its door gently, then put the exercise away. Later, run a short part of the cycle while your dog is far enough away to remain relaxed, perhaps in another room with the door open. Reward calm behavior and let them leave. Find the part of the cycle where they begin to react, the next practice should stay below that point rather than rehearse it.

Do not switch on a loud stage abruptly while holding the dog close. If they hide, freeze, or refuse food, make it quieter or give more distance. It is also fine to run the machine when your dog is out for a walk or resting behind a closed door. The aim is a peaceful home, not proximity to an appliance. For more on helping a dog cope with household sounds, see the noise-fear guide. Let them leave the kitchen instead of making the appliance a test.
