My Dog Barks at the Washing Machine. Can I Help Them Get Used to It?

A washer changes noise and vibration without warning. Give your dog a quiet place and practice with the easiest stage first.
2 min read·Field notes

The washer fills quietly, then spins and your dog begins barking. They may hear a sound or feel a vibration before you do. Do not confine them beside the appliance until the cycle ends. Move them to a quieter room and let them rest. Keep them clear of cords, open doors, and any detergent or pods that could harm them if swallowed.

If barking started suddenly or your dog seems distressed by many household sounds, talk to your veterinarian. A qualified, reward-based behavior professional can help with a gradual plan for a dog who panics despite distance.

Make the cycle predictable

Start when the machine is off. Walk past it at a distance where your dog is comfortable and reward calm movement. On another day, run a quiet part of the cycle with the dog in a separate room, rewarding relaxed behavior. Later, introduce the louder stage only at a distance where they can still eat and leave freely. If they bark, freeze, or hide, stop practice and make the next session easier. Do not needlessly restart the spin cycle as a surprise test.

You can also schedule laundry when your dog is on a walk with someone else or resting far from the utility room. Training is useful if it makes daily life easier, but management is a valid outcome. Your dog does not need to love the washer to be safe at home. The noise-fear guide gives a wider approach to sound worries, begin with distance and choice, not a forced laundry-room lesson.
